Mecho & Yonna (pictured as puppies, above) are registered with the American Karakachan Dog Association. Their immediate ancestors are from the original imported Karakachans into the United States by Dr. D. Philip Sponenberg DVM, in 2004. His search for livestock guardians of moderate size that would be non-roaming, not incessant barkers, and safe for people, culminated in the discovery and subsequent importation of this breed. The Karakachan dogs have worked alongside nomadic shepherds for centuries in Bulgaria and Greece. They are affectionate, gentle, but protective toward their family and flock, and will defend against those who pose a threat or who trespass on their territory. Relatively new in the USA, they represent an excellent choice as guardians for livestock owners.
Karakachans come in a variety of colors and their coats can range in length from short to fairly long. They are born with long, shorter, or bob tails. They love water. They are wonderful guardians and work well together as a team.
Mecho is our Karakachan male. He is a big boy, but so gentle and good with the goats. Mecho is from some of the original Bugarian imports of Karakachans.
Yonna is our Karakachan female. Like Mecho, she is a devoted and faithful livestock guardian with the goats, and an excellent mother to her pups. We love them both!and faithful
